Width and length

Tie width is chosen to suit your build and the lapel width of the suit it will be worn with — a narrow lapel generally pairs better with a slimmer tie, and vice versa, so ordering alongside a suit commission helps keep the whole outfit proportioned correctly.

Cloth options

Silk remains the standard cloth for a necktie, available in solid colours, subtle textures, and patterns to suit both everyday business wear and more formal occasions. A wool or knitted tie offers a more casual, textured alternative for less formal business settings.

Care and longevity

A silk tie should be hung rather than knotted and left overnight, allowing the fabric to relax and recover its shape between wears — a tie left knotted tends to develop a permanent crease at the point where the knot was tied.

Building a rotation

Most working wardrobes benefit from three or four ties in different cloths and colours, ordered gradually rather than all at once, so that no single tie is worn frequently enough to wear out before the rest of the collection.

Choosing pattern versus solid

A solid or subtly textured tie works across the widest range of shirts and suits, while a patterned tie should generally be chosen to complement rather than match a patterned shirt, avoiding two competing prints in the same outfit.
