A bespoke bow tie is cut and finished by hand rather than machine-tied, giving a cleaner knot and a better proportioned finish than an off-the-shelf version. It’s the standard choice for black-tie events and pairs naturally with a tuxedo commission.

Self-tie vs pre-tied

A genuine self-tie bow tie is considered the more correct choice for formal events, and once the knot technique is learned it takes only a little practice to tie consistently well. We also offer a structured pre-tied option for anyone who prefers a guaranteed finish over the process of tying it themselves.

Shape and cloth

Butterfly and batwing shapes are both available, cut from the same fine wool or silk cloths used across our formalwear collection. Matching the bow tie cloth to a tuxedo’s satin lapel facing, rather than the wool body of the jacket, is the more traditional and generally sharper-looking choice.

Learning to tie it yourself

A few short practice sessions in front of a mirror before your event is usually enough to tie a confident, evenly balanced bow — most of the difficulty is unfamiliarity rather than genuine technical skill, and it becomes straightforward after the first two or three attempts.

Ordering more than one

A black self-tie bow tie covers most black-tie invitations on its own, but a second in midnight navy or a subtle texture gives useful variety for repeat formal events without needing to match the exact same tuxedo pairing every time.
